M3Forum: Subframe / RACP - Best Repair Tips and Tricks Perhaps one of the most publicised and pervasive issues of the E46 M3 is that of ‘rear subframe cracks’. The name is misleading, as the rear subframe is not what develops cracks, but rather the Rear Axle Carrier Panel (RACP) to which the rear subframe is mounted. This issue is

I'm getting ready to do the Turner reinforcement plates on my '04 M3 vert and wanted to take the extra step of injecting structural foam into the body after the plates are welded in. My problem is that the BMW material and kit (BMW part #83-19-0-445-721) is NLA or past the expiration date at dealers
Just a lot of trouble to go through. The E46 was a continuance of the E36 which was an old design that had issues too. E90 and beyond did not have this issue due to the wide(r) path subframe design that pretty much all RWD cars have today. Sadly the E46 did not copy the E39 design for whatever reason. Maybe packaging, development cost, handling

Solid front end bushings to the chassis do transmit more road feel. The harder the bushing material, the more vibration transmission. I have been told offline that with the 4 rear subframe
If you're unsure get a Blackstone lab test done, $30 and they'll tell you the wear in your oil. As far as cost not sure. I'm doing it myself. Oem rod bearings, oil, filter, gaskets and new bolts is $500. I'll be replacing my oil pump which if I remember correctly was 2-300. Expect atleast 5hours of labor maybe more.
Basically, the owner of this E46 M3 came into the shop inquiring about the subframe reinforcement plates. The first couple shots in the album show exactly how bad it was when it arrived. Our seniormost tech took a test drive, the result of which was this quote: "I have never felt closer to death than I have in this car."
The gasket is fairly cheap but the labor can cost a lot. I dont know the book time on BMW's for oil pan gasket removal but $1800 does sound like a lot. If there labor rate is $125/hr that means they are charging 14 hours to change a gasket which sounds way too high, even transmissions are maybe 10-12 hours book time.

Dec 24 2021 Update: Hello world, My E46 is on all four jackstands, and surprisingly there was almost no rust aside from the rear subframe. I had to expand my arsenal and purchase a few additional tools listed below:
$8-$10k. Depends on what you do though. When you drop the rear subframe, great time to do bushings, etc. when you pull the oil pan and drop the front subframe, motor moo it’s, power steering lines, etc. If you take advantage that most of the labor is done already, you can spend more but get bang for the buck since you already paid for the labor.
I would not be so certain that BMW will not reimburse you partially for subframe failure for the prime years this occurred. Not sure of the exact years, but it is the E46, and something like 1999, 2000, 2001 being the prime years. Subframe failure outside of these years is not covered since it is not due to under-engineering by BMW. See more.
